Own a property?
A secondary dwelling can support friends or family in need, teenagers, and aging parents, or it be rented out for additional income. It’s a great way to future-proof your property and plan for your future while also increasing your property value. Plus, it’s a way to support others in need and share your property without sharing your personal space.

Secondary Dwelling Benefits
Adding a secondary dwelling to your property is a great way to increase your investment return without purchasing more land. You can maximize your investment potential without the added stress of real estate fees, solicitor fees, land purchase, or stamp duty.
Secondary Dwelling Benefits
If you don’t need a lot of space or work away from home, then renting out your house and living in a secondary dwelling on your property can be a practical way to achieve your life goals. It provides increased income, allowing you to pay off your property sooner. Additionally, downsizing to a smaller living space can reduce the time and effort you spend on cleaning and maintenance, freeing up valuable time and energy.
Secondary Dwelling Benefits
A granny flat is the most popular type of secondary dwelling. Essentially, a secondary dwelling is an extra living space that can be situated within, attached to, or detached from the primary dwelling on the same property. Typically, it is smaller in size compared to the main dwelling. A secondary dwelling can either be self-sufficient or share amenities like a kitchen with the primary dwelling.
On Friday 23 September 2022, the Queensland Government announced that property owners can now rent secondary dwellings, such as granny flats, to non-household members. The government amended the Planning Regulation 2017 to support this change, with the intention of reviewing the legislation changes after three years.
